What you need for Bible Class:
1. Open Bible
You may choose which version of the Bible you wish to use. However, you must memorize all of your verses out of that one version. You must always have your Bible in class. This is particularly necessary on Verse Quiz days (Fridays), as you will need to supply the version you used for someone else to grade your verse quiz.
You may use any main version. Some of the more preferred versions are listed:
New Amercian Standard Version
New International Version
King James Version
New King James Version
Revised Standard Version
I will accept The Living Bible and the Philips Translation, as well.
2. Open Notebook
We will take notes of some kind every day. Be prepared.
Please use loose leaf paper, not spiral notebooks, unless you wish to help with clean-up.
3. Open Mind
Listening may be the most important skill you will need in my class.
It is much easier to remember what you have listened to carefully and understood.
If you do not listen well and try to take good notes, you will struggle to pass my class!
Special Note: Helpful Hints in Reading Your Bible
1. Always Ignore the Numbers ! .......
That is, the chapter and verse numbers. They are not inspired, as such. They are only an index to help you find your way in the Bible (can you imagine finding anything in there without those numbers?). The Bible was written in organized thoughts and paragraphs....read it that way.
2. Always Ask Questions !......
What is really going on in this passage? What was the setting then?
How does this fit with the overall point of the book?
What was the point here? What is the point now?
Out of all the things an author could have told us, why this? Why am I being told this?
3. Always See If and How the Bible Answers these questions itself....
Very often, in fact more often than not, the Bible and it's writers will answer the above questions sooner or later in the context or even the explanation and analysis of a later writer. The Bible will interpret itself if we pay attention!
Class Policies:
1. Be Prepared
* Always have your classroom materials: Bible, notes, writing instrument
* Have assigned work ready and on time.
* If you leave class to retrieve "forgotten" materials, you will receive a tardy.
2. Follow Instructions
* Be on time. I will enforce the tardy policy.
* Respect others during class discussions. Do not interrupt.
* Listen well. It is the most important skill in this class.
* Keep the aisles clear. Put your "luggage" under your desk. If it won't fit, don't bring it.
* Observe the school dress code policies (particularly the shirt-tails).
* Referrals will be automatic if you are talking or out of your seat when I am called out of the room...and remember...THERE IS NO SAFETY IN NUMBERS !
