About Mrs. Holcombe Minimize

"Declare His glory among the heathen, His wonders among all people!  For the Lord is Great and greatly to be PRAISED!"  I have the wonderful privilege of teaching choir and band at Grace Academy.  My husband, Fred and I, have been at the church for almost sixteen years.  We have three wonderful children - Scott, 19; Janna, 15 and Luke, 10.  My prayer or this year is that my students will grow to love the Lord and learn to praise Him with their voices and their instruments.  God is truly "Worthy of our Praise!"

5th Grade Beginning Band Minimize

Dear 5th Grade Parent,What Do I Need for Band?

Your child has expressed interest in beginning band. Here are the details:

Band is going to meet once a week on Wednesday mornings from 10:15 to 11:10. The students will be required to practice 20 to 30 minutes/5 days a week. If your child is not willing to put forth the effort necessary to learn to play, please do not enroll your child in band. It is very frustrating for the child and the rest of the class when students who never practice hold up the progress of the group. This is a one year commitment and your child will not be permitted to quit.

We have several instruments available for you to rent from the school. The cost is $60 a semester and will be charged to your school bill in September and January. Purchasing an instrument or renting from a local music store is an option available to you as well. There are a few reliable local retailers: My favorite is Consistent C on Dayton Blvd. The internet, including ebay, and pawn shops are great places to find a deal. If you something you’d like for me to look at just email me at thholcombe@comcast.net.   Please do not purchase an instrument from Sam’s, Walmart or another non-music retailer especially if the instrument is made in China or Korea. Music stores refuse to try to repair them!! I will order the band method books and will charge your school bill $10.

I will be available to meet with you and your child to look at instruments in the choir/band room on Friday, August 20st or Monday, August 23rd from 3:00 to 4:00. Please email me at the above address to let me know of your plans to participate in the band. If you cannot come on Friday or Monday and need a separate appointment time, I will be happy to work with you. Just email me at thholcombe@comcast.net. Also, if you already have an instrument or rent one from someone else, let me know that as well so I can be prepared for the first class with the correct number of books.

Thank you for considering this great musical opportunity for your child; and remember no prior experience is necessary to learn to play a band instrument.
